How to Create your Dream Bathroom on a Budget

Something that I am always interested in, is achieving a luxury look on a budget. Just because I enjoy a frugal lifestyle, doesn’t mean that I don’t like luxurious things – quite the contrary in fact!
I love all of the glamorous things in life, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that! The point where it can go wrong is when you aspire to have things that are beyond your financial reach, and end up buying them on credit to keep up with the Joneses.

If you like a certain item or way of living, that’s completely up to you! The point that I like to make is that you should always do it within your budget, and find the cheapest way of doing things. If you can buy something for £10 that looks exactly the same as the £100 one, it’s a no brainer which one to get, right?

Save up in cash for your ‘wants’ and this will also give you time to think about whether you do actually want to buy it. I’ve been spending a lot of time on Pinterest lately looking for home inspiration!

Creating your dream bathroom doesn’t mean that you have to break the bank, and there are plenty of ways you can achieve a luxury look for less. BigBathroomShop.co.uk share their top tips and tricks on where to save and where to splurge.

Set a budget

Whether you’re planning on making over your bathroom from scratch or just plan on small, cosmetic updates, the first thing you need to do is set a budget. Once you have this figured out, you can decide how best to spend it.
It’s a good idea to make a wish list, and ask yourself what do you need in your bathroom and what do you want? You can then think about which items should be assigned more of the budget than others, for example you could spend more on a freestanding bath but save on a new basin and toilet.

Stick to the same layout

Keep costs low by sticking to the same layout. A new layout means that old fixtures and tiles have to be ripped up, and extra plumbing work will be required, which will increase costs. If things don’t go to plan, costs can soon start to spiral, so make sure to set your budget a bit higher to allow for any unforeseen bills.
New fixtures can easily be installed where the old ones once stood, and there will be no disruption to the plumbing.

Upgrade the taps

If the basin and bath are in good condition, then you can get away with just replacing the taps. Good quality taps don’t have to cost a fortune, and there’s many styles available that will add a luxury touch to your bathroom.
Waterfall taps are perfect for creating a chic, spa-style look, and there’s a great choice at BigBathroomShop.co.uk. Always buy the best quality you can afford, and if you invest correctly, fixtures and fittings will stand the test of time.

Save on a new basin and toilet

A floor mounted basin and toilet is usually the cheapest option, as more installation work is required for a wall mounted design, which hangs from a frame that’s fitted into the wall.  Floor mounted basins and toilets can take up more floor space, so if you have a small bathroom, opt for a compact design.

Buying a complete bathroom suite can also help you to save money compared to buying individual items. You could also avoid creating an on-trend look and choose a classic style that won’t date instead.

Choose the right bath

Rather than buy a separate bath and shower enclosure, you can save money by opting for a shower bath that combines plenty of space for both bathing and showering.
A shower bath is also a great option for a small bathroom too. If you find that you never use the bath, then you could do away with it completely and replace it with a walk in shower and low profile tray for a sleek and stylish look.

Luxury for less

There’s no need to buy expensive floor tiles to add a little luxury to your bathroom, instead you could opt for inexpensive vinyl. Vinyl is durable and moisture-proof, making it a great option for the bathroom. It comes in an array of designs, including wood and stone effect patterns.

Fit a heated towel rail

Replacing an old radiator with a heated towel rail will transform the look of your bathroom in an instant. Available in a wide range of sizes and designs, a heated towel rail provides a stylish and practical way to keep your towels warm and dry.

Quick and easy updates

If you don’t have enough budget for a complete bathroom refurbishment, quick and easy cosmetic changes can prove to be a cost effective solution. A fresh coat of paint can transform your bathroom, and even new accessories such as towels, plants and decorative objects, can make a huge difference.

With a little imagination and creativity, you can easily revamp your bathroom without spending too much money. You could even change the handles on cabinet doors and choose a new matching accessory set – sometimes it’s the smallest changes that can make a big impact.
